to block chuck hagel, the current defense secretary leon panetta is on his way out. they gave mr. panetta his sendoff on saturday, though it looks like he'll probably be in charge for another week or so. his time has been a period of lasting change for the u.s. military. after the end of the iraq war, he has overseen the beginning of the end of america's longest war ever in afghanistan. the clinton era policy of "don't ask, don't tell" ended under leon panetta's watch, at his recommendation that the nation allow openly gay people to be a part of the military. last year secretary panetta took steps to reform the way the military deals with sexual assault in its ranks, going as far in those reforms as he could without help from congress. he also opened new assignments in the military, new roles for female soldiers. last month, with the end of his term near, he proclaimed an end to the ban on women in combat, full stop. well, today in a new memo, the outgoing defense secretary, leon panetta, made another historic change, saying that discrimination based on sexual orientation no longer has a

today. the hearings today. panetta talking about the giant screw-up in benghazi, libya and brennan explaining the killer drone, does he want to be the next cia director. and let's talk benghazi first, did you learn anything? >> well, one thing that was interesting i thought from the panetta testimony is when general dempsey, he testified with leon panetta chairman of the joint chiefs and he said he was surprised when he was pressed that hillary clinton didn't read that all important august 15th cable, right, where chris stevens said, we aren't going to be able to repel and attack in benghazi with what we have. and he was pressed on that. are you surprised she didn't see he it, well, yeah, i was surprised. it looked like there was buck passing from panetta and dempsey to the state department because they said people are wondering why we didn't have armed aircraft in the vicinity, well, we didn't have enough time, and essentially saying the state department didn't request it. so, it all seems like, you know, fingers are pointing in the other direction. >> bill: here is what i think.

on the senate side that leon panetta and general dempsey both said that he and hillary clinton had argued last season for arming the rebels in syria. more than 60,000 people have died, but that others on the foreign policy team pushed back, and the president made a decision not to. >> yeah. let me just say on this one i may be inclined toward the president. i'm not certain who those -- who would get those weapons. i don't want to fwet into too much detail. i'm also on the intelligence committee, but i'm -- i am not certain that those weapons wouldn't fall into the wrong hands, and that's a real problem we've had in syria. maybe more should be done earlier on to get better control of the rebels, but now to me there's too many unsavory pro-islamist elements among those rebels, so i am not certain that they should be given weapons. that's a tough call, and i'm not close enough to it on the ground, but from what i do know, i'm very leary about giving any weapons because they could end up in the hands of islamists. >> congressman peter king, it's great to have your perspective, and thank you and go
